You learn something new every day; what did you learn today?

Submit interesting and specific facts that you just found out (not broad information you looked up, TodayILearned is not /r/wikipedia).

Posting rules

  1. Submissions must be verifiable. Please link directly to a reliable source that supports the claim in your post title. Images alone do not count as valid references. Videos are fine so long as they come from reputable sources (e.g. BBC, discovery, etc).

  2. No personal opinions, anecdotes or subjective statements (e.g "TIL xyz is a great movie").

  3. No news or recent sources. News or any source (blog, video, etc.) more recent than two months is not allowed.

  4. No politics. Historical politics are fine, but anything relating to current politics/politicians is not allowed.

  5. No misleading claims. Posts that omit essential information, or present unrelated facts in a way that suggest a connection, will be removed.

  6. Rephrase your post title if the following are not met:

    1. Titles must begin with "TIL ..."
    2. Make them descriptive, concise and specific (e.g. not "TIL something interesting about bacon").
    3. Titles must be able to stand on their own without requiring readers to click on a link. Starting your title with a why/what/who/where/how modifier should be unnecessary.
    4. "TIL about ..." and other broad posts don't belong on TIL. Try /r/Wikipedia, etc. instead, or be more specific (and avoid the word "about").
    5. "TIL how to ..." posts belong on /r/HowTo.
  7. No trivial or obvious facts (e.g. "TIL the sky is blue"), or facts that appeal only to a narrow audience, specifically no software/website tips (e.g. "TIL you can click on widgets in WidgetMaker 1.22").

(Why we need rules and the TIL FAQ)

Weird to see him credited with the Gorillaz and not Blur.

I guess I'm old.

[–]HireALLTheThings 55 points56 points ago

Gorillaz has been his main focus for a long time now. I've accepted the change.

[–]lostrock 5 points6 points ago

He says both Blur and Gorillaz are coming to an end, though. Blur supposedly won't be performing after they do their thing at the London Olympics, and Albarn has apparently had a big falling-out with Gorillaz co-creator Jamie Hewlett. :(

Haha I want to kiss that man.

[–]tomf64 30 points31 points ago

I'd kiss that man between the cheeks!

[–]DastardlyBarnacle 10 points11 points ago

The creator of 'Glee' is a little drama queen who flips his shit when anyone denies rights to cover songs on his shitty show. As if it's some huge honor to have your music bastardized and pissed on by auto-tuned production in a glorified version of 'High School Musical'. I am but a casual Foo Fighters listener, but would high five Dave a million times for this if I could.

[–]moogle516 43 points44 points ago

He's like the Bill Murray of the music world.

[–]carelessuniverse 24 points25 points ago

I love Dave Grohl, he is a very kind man, always speaks the truth, the responsible of the end of those shitty 80's drums (specially snare) sounds, he sings very well, but I hate Foo Fighters, not that I speak bullshit of them but I really think is very cliche, to say the least.

[–]Karma_Redeemed 17 points18 points ago

One has to admit he is quite talented however. He played all of the instruments on the Foo Fighters first album.

[–]n3rdalert 23 points24 points ago

This makes me so fucking happy.

[–]Hilholiday 277 points278 points ago

They used a picture of Slash without his top-hat!? BLASPHEMY

[–]PatronofSnark 196 points197 points ago

I wasn't even aware that slash had a face.

[–]Se7en_Sinner 32 points33 points ago

He doesn't, it morphs into what you want to see.

[–]fAuxlRose 5 points6 points ago

cousin It is vaguely based on the writer's only encounter with Slash.

[–]manlydishwasher 30 points31 points ago

He even wore it to Top Gear! oh wait....

[–]kragmoor 70 points71 points ago

that wasn't slash that was your mom slash isn't real dude

[–]HireALLTheThings 29 points30 points ago

Based on the Classic Dutch fairy tale: Vunter Slaush.

[–]OdinsBeard 306 points307 points ago

My old boss was an audio engineer in the 80's. His wife would make sack lunches for him and one for Slash when they recorded. Slash is pretty much one of the most genuine and grateful human beings in music. My boss had the opposite opinion of Dave Mustaine...

[–]Thallis 77 points78 points ago

I don't think many Megadeth fans would disagree with you. The dude's a total dickhead, but man, can he play.

[–]WolfInTheField 31 points32 points ago

Oh yes. His right hand is a steam engine with a nuclear generator.

His mouth, however, is a manure-factory on heroin, and I'm not even talking about his questionable singing (which grew on me pretty fast, actually).

[–]chefmcduck 168 points169 points ago

Slash eating a bag lunch would be quite the picture. Shitty Watercolor! Where are you!!

[–]Niggas4Hitler 34 points35 points ago

"Slash you can't play on the swing sets until you finish your lunch."

[–]Mattyice318 76 points77 points ago

He's probably just busy brushing up on something else right now

[–]auntiecoagulant 40 points41 points ago

Or maybe he's baroque and he can't buy more paint.

[–]Anchor_Arts 11 points12 points ago

AHAHAHA ART PUNS!

[–]fknrat 5 points6 points ago

don't laugh if the poor guy ran out of monet

[–]deathrider012 34 points35 points ago

I met Dave Mustaine and David Ellefson after Megadeth's Rust in Peace 20th Anniversary concert a few years back...

Mustaine acted like he was just fucking THRILLED to be there, barely acknowledged the fans, (this was a fan meet and greet thing), and was really kinda unpleasant.

Ellefson, on the other hand, was a pretty nice dude. He seemed like he was having a good time meeting the fans, talked to most of us like we were actually people, and was just nice. Sure, he may have been just putting on a public face, but still, at least he showed SOME decency to his fans.

[–]OdinsBeard 37 points38 points ago

Ellefson has the patience of a saint for putting up with Mustaine over the years.

[–]psiphre 12 points13 points ago

i really can't fault megadeth for being uppity. imagine if you had to be "metallica lite" for your entire music career.

[–]yocxl 53 points54 points ago

Mustaine needs to keep his mouth shut and play his guitar. Take it from Oderus Urungus.

[–]OdinsBeard 27 points28 points ago

Saw that on /metal. I tend to agree. There's a Mustaine quote about how he won't perform some of his early songs because they contained witchcraft...

[–]Madrical 15 points16 points ago

Dude can shred but he's a douche.

[–]napalmx 3 points4 points ago

That was fucking hilarious, thanks

[–]nope_nic_tesla 31 points32 points ago

Mustaine is a birther, fundamentalist Christian and Alex Jones fanatic. Woohoo.

[–]OdinsBeard 40 points41 points ago

He met Mustaine mid 80's before he "sobered up and found god." His personality operates on the extreme ends of the spectrum. My boss was also a "born again" but would punctuate his Mustaine stories with, "Fuck Dave."

[–]WolfInTheField 19 points20 points ago

It's a bit of a dilemma for me, man.

I love Megadeth. They made amazing metal records, shitty singing or not. But it's so hard to support them when their frontman takes every opportunity to reveal himself as an ignorant, self-centered, out-of-touch wretch!

[–]frownifdown 385 points386 points ago

One of the comments in the comment section...

"slash u suck.. and all of the ones who hate glee... i hope ur band does not succeed..."

Ummm... this is awkward.

[–]Szalkow 159 points160 points ago

i hope ur band does not succeed...

I mean, it's not like GnR is getting inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame their first year of eligibility or anything.

[–]nanowerx 103 points104 points ago

Without Rush, that "Hall of Fame" is a joke.

[–]Szalkow 13 points14 points ago

Many RRHoF Foundation members think they should be in it, but Rush hasn't received enough nomination votes yet.

[–]nanowerx 68 points69 points ago

Yet Madonna made the cut? Again, I reiterate, the Rock and Roll "Hall of Fame" is a joke.

[–]mrbriancomputer 59 points60 points ago

Madonna is every bit rock n' roll as anyone in there, okay?

Nope, can't even rationalize that as a joke. I'm going to go take a shower.

[–]sir-slonks-a-lot 5 points6 points ago

Exactly, so Rush shouldn't even be in it! The three have even said they didn't want to be in it because of how ridiculous the situation really is.

[–]Gandalv 35 points36 points ago

Are you fucking shitting me? RUSH, is NOT in the RRHoF? That is a travesty! I had no idea this was the case.

Full disclosure - Rush fan.

[–]dustin_the_wind 18 points19 points ago

Rush, Kiss, Deep Purple, Mötley Crüe, Motörhead, Thin Lizzy, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden...

[–]guntycankles 23 points24 points ago

Neither is Queen. Douchebag Axl Rose: Likely dreamed of being in the hall of fame - gets inducted before tons of other more worthy artists, snubs it like he's still relevant and too cool.

[–]lextown88 7 points8 points ago

Rose said, "Nope."

[–]slashleelove 3 points4 points ago

he basically said his fans aren't justification for going. Effing prick.

[–]LTiberious 6 points7 points ago

The second part is also great.
what will u commentators achieve something with all those hating.. u don't even care about other's feelings.. slash u suck.

[–]centurion911 3 points4 points ago

I really hope they're not implying Glee is a band.

[–]OBLIVIOUS2EVERYTHING 2 points3 points ago

Oh but they are. Best comment I've seen was one on youtube saying.

"y do old bands steel songs from glee? Thats so unorgnal. they shud sue them"

[–]frownifdown 3 points4 points ago

Pretty sure that was a troll.

[–]OBLIVIOUS2EVERYTHING 1 point2 points ago

I really want to believe... I really do... but from going through that persons comments history I think otherwise.

[–]stone500 109 points110 points ago

Fair enough if he doesn't want his songs on Glee, but that didn't stop Sheryl Crow from doing a pretty bad cover of Sweet Child of Mine.

[–]OldOrder 74 points75 points ago

Or that god awful halftime performance by the Black Eyed Peas at the superbowl.

[–]NowISeeTheFunnySide 13 points14 points ago

Argh, I had blocked that out of my mind, damn you. Flashbacks...

[–]Blarvey 6 points7 points ago

Or an awesome version by Vitamin String Quartet.

I am sure he is not the only or first to do it, but my friend had this playing as the entry music for the wedding party at his ceremony. It was awesome.

[–]daubergoat 859 points860 points ago

And boy, the cross-over between GnR fans and Glee fans is huge. Those six, maybe seven people must be just heartbroken.

[–]CaesarOrgasmus 247 points248 points ago

I can think of at least four GnR songs that transcend fan bases. Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City, Sweet Child o' Mine, and November Rain are all extremely popular among many different demographics. I mean, it's not like they're some underground garage band. They're one of the biggest rock bands ever.

[–]mrpopenfresh 24 points25 points ago

For real, they have mainstream, radio stables.

[–]Sarahssecret 83 points84 points ago

Filled with mainstream, radio horses.

[–]mrpopenfresh 12 points13 points ago

*Staples.

Dammit, can't even come up with a witty response. Get my upvote.

[–]sookas 35 points36 points ago*

I feel sad. I've only heard Welcome to the Jungle. I will now go listen to all of them.

Edit: I stand corrected, it seems I just suck at remembering names. But then again, I already knew that, I just forgot about it.

[–]r4r4me 64 points65 points ago

You can't have not heard Paradise City. Even if you didn't know the name I refuse to believe it's possible to have never heard it before haha.

[–]kearneycation 46 points47 points ago

Same with Sweet Child O' Mine. Jukebox/Sports bar favourite right there.

[–]nerryblackberry 27 points28 points ago

or just walk into a Guitar Center

[–]wolfkstaag 40 points41 points ago

I met someone today who had no idea what Tetris was.

My world changed.

[–]carlosmachina 13 points14 points ago

Don't get me wrong, not being condescending or anything, but honestly, how did you manage to do that?

[–]EnglishBulldog 23 points24 points ago

They probably have heard the songs but just didn't know who the artist was. Believe it or not, a lot of people listen to music on the radio and other mediums but do not bother to learn about the artists. I've found that as I have gotten older, I still listen to music and whats popular on the radio, but I have less and less desire to know anything about the bands. Experience has taught me that they are not Gods.. well, most of them. :P

[–]rage_quitter 7 points8 points ago

you have heard at least the intro to sweet child o mine

[–]25_Cent_Booch 316 points317 points ago

That's the point. Imagine how many 'overnight' GnR fans there would be once the episode featuring their song aired. Slash saved their music from that.

[–]daubergoat 287 points288 points ago

Slash is clearly a humanitarian.

[–]Zeppelanoid 128 points129 points ago

He's not real.

[–]ExecutiveChimp 112 points113 points ago

Are you talking about...slash fiction?

[–]Losbasterdos 13 points14 points ago

My Kids are crying now they were not ready! They were not Ready!!!

[–]QuantumBreakfast 15 points16 points ago

Ssshhhh his parents haven't told him yet.

[–]MDKLXCS 11 points12 points ago

Vunterslash finally turned down a gig? Congrats. And doesn't Axl own the bands music anyway?

[–]Zeppelanoid 4 points5 points ago

Axl owns the name "Guns N' Roses".

The music is owned by Axl, Slash, and Duff IIRC (at least the stuff from when they were actually in the band).

[–]maximomore2 113 points114 points ago

The trend is actually that glee fans believe glee does a better job than the original band. Fucking retarded I know.

[–]unclerummy 19 points20 points ago

Yeah, I'm imagining them hearing GNR and saying "OMG - this sounds like that song from Glee, but what's with all the screaming and loud guitars?!"

[–]SoundOfOneHand 14 points15 points ago

Well, if you get used to all music sounding kind of the same, everything laid over a sterilized pop track and auto-tuned, it's what you start expecting all music to sound like, so the original no longer seems "right". I actually turned my wife off to the show with these kinds of arguments, though I found the non-musical parts of it to be somewhat entertaining.

[–]alchemist5 40 points41 points ago

Some of their covers are pretty good, actually. A bunch kinda suck. A lot of them just sound pretty much the same as the original.

[–]StealthTomato 47 points48 points ago

I have a good but not great ear for music, and I can't stand Glee's covers. The auto-tune is brutal. None of the singers sound human, and auto-tune isn't even being used for effects, just pitch correction.

A lot of people tell me they can't hear it. I don't understand.

[–]buffcat 9 points10 points ago

I think it's a combo of dubbing a different recording and auto tuning. It's definitely apparent on some songs

[–]zombiesunlimited 3 points4 points ago

Yes, i hate the show for this reason only. As an audio engineer who has pitch corrected countless records, I can tell you first hand i know when something has been fixed.

Also! They don't use the auto-tune program, as that program only allows for real-time pitch correcting. The one most widely used for pitch correcting (not used for the auto-tune sound) is a program called Melodyne. Melodyne allows you to basically stop time, fix a certain part, and continue. It's very easy to use and quite comprehensive.

You have to be a decent singer and i'm sure they're probably all DECENT singers (but probably not great). THAT'S NOT THE POINT! The point is none of it is live and every vocal track is pitch corrected and fixed. It is misleading, which is why kids think it's so much better than the originals.

[–]POWERFUCKER 25 points26 points ago

Those 'overnight' fans probably wouldn't even know they were listening to a GnR song. It would probably only be known to them as "that Glee song".

[–]guitarpsycho182 24 points25 points ago

"Oh my god I LOVE Guns and Roses!"

"That's cool, what's your favorite album?"

"Sweet Child Of Mine!"

"......."

[–]slvrbullet87 4 points5 points ago

I would rather them say that than "Chinese Democracy"

[–]imdwalrus 5 points6 points ago

Not to defend Glee's fanbase, but that could just as easily apply to the thousands or millions of people who only know Guns n Roses from the radio or from their songs being played everywhere.

[–]alcabazar 8 points9 points ago

And this is bad...how?

[–]Kloster 75 points76 points ago*

Everyone likes GnR, they're like a harder Queen. I think daubergoat is kidding himself, GnR is as mainstream as Madonna.
That being said, I think Glee is a shitshow.

EDIT:
My bad, daubergoat instead of slash

[–]Sean1708 32 points33 points ago

I must have missed the part where Slash said his music wasn't mainstream.

[–]the_walrus_was_ringo 21 points22 points ago

How are GnR anything like Queen? As a massive fan of Queen and a mild fan of GnR, the only similarity I can think of is the hairstyles and shredding of Slash/Brian May. Unless you're talking singles rather than albums?

[–]Midlothianer 39 points40 points ago

I can actually understand it somewhat. Massive personalities up front, equally massive guitarist. Lots of genres touched upon. A few massive, epic songs that became instant classics. The music isn't that similar but the way they presented themselves was. And the lead singer was gay. Mercury literally, Axl in the twelve-year old on XBox Live way.

[–]tangibleintangible 6 points7 points ago

I would also like to point out that Axl and Mercury both had amazing vocal ranges. Granted, Mercury sounded like an opera singer and Axl sounded like a cat in heat... but I think it worked for both.

[–]TheDudeAmI 9 points10 points ago

Not everyone likes Guns n Roses, and they are in no way a harder version of Queen. But yes, Glee is garbage.

[–]funkymoose 180 points181 points ago

TIL reddit really hates Glee.

[–]LikesGirls 47 points48 points ago

I don't see why. It gives a good message and has good intentions, is it really that offensive?

22 year old college students aren't the target audience so I don't know why they care.

[–]MichaelPeters4321 2 points3 points ago

The average Reddit user is way to narcissistic to ever come up with the idea that there might be something that was not made for them.

[–]James-VZ 43 points44 points ago*

I used to really like Glee. I got into it because it was kinda-sorta-somewhat cheesy but it had some fairly kickass songs on it pretty much every episode. Then towards the end of Season 1 the drama bomb dropped and the characters changed and it was actually substantial, measurable drama that had implications and depth and needed to be contemplated. Plus it still had kick ass songs.

Then season two came along and it was alright, the good songs were slightly more rare but still enough, and they gave Brittany more talking moments and had her do that Britney Spears episode that was literally (literally) bonerific. Uncle Jesse (Full House not Dukes of Hazard, people) even had some cameos that were pretty good. So even if the overall quality of the show had declined a bit, I was still invested enough into the characters to watch.

Then they came out with Season 3, which as far as I'm aware has been entirely about how edgy it is to be gay and how many fucking show tunes they can cram into one episode unironically. It's so awful now it hurts, and I've stopped watching it entirely because of it. I couldn't really place my finger on a specific jump the shark moment, but Karofsky being a closet homosexual who bullies everyone who then comes out and accepts his gayness who then tries to kill himself is the easiest example to point out how contrived it's gotten. Santana changed from the hot bisexual chick into the militant lesbo because apparently there weren't enough gay storylines involved, and every episode seemed to revolve around how much of a fucking dick Schuester is to his wife-to-be only to make it up to her with some ultra lame romance attempt like a box of fucking chocolates or a dozen roses or some shit at the very end (the takeaway being the dramatic equivalent of "You know I'd never hurt you baby" as he slams her face into a wall.)

Anyway, if you don't hate Glee now you're an idiot. But if you didn't like it in Season 1 then you're probably an idiot too.

[–]iamnotmyusername 7 points8 points ago

This week's episode was really good actually! But I might be a little biased because I love Darren Criss so much - he sang most of the songs in that episode. That guy is made of awesome.

Also, I'm a 23 year old female, so I'd say I'm allowed to watch Glee without calling it a guilty pleasure.

[–]brocahantas 17 points18 points ago

Wunterslaush!

[–]TheSublime 16 points17 points ago

[–]Onepush 147 points148 points ago

You would think that. And you would be right.

[–]yocxl 61 points62 points ago

The show does suck, and its creator bitches out bands and artists who won't let them use their music on his shitty show. Consummate professional.

[–]SonicDissonance 12 points13 points ago

This does seem to make headlines each time someone says no.

Honestly I gave glee a few chances to impress me and I still don't get it. If there was actually some purpose to sing the songs I might enjoy it, but they sing songs just to sing songs and it does not make any sense.

[–]FinbarMagee 3 points4 points ago

That guy is a major doucher from the look of this article.

[–]on_the_redpill 48 points49 points ago

All sorts of terrible... The late 20's women I know who love it just make me cringe.

[–]GeneralWarts 37 points38 points ago

Anyone want to fill me in on why Slash seems to have final say on this? What about Axl Rose? Who actually owns the songs?

[–]muteterror 78 points79 points ago

Axl was probably too busy eating pies to comment.

[–]Orval 42 points43 points ago

The last I remember Axl only fully owns the name of the band, while he Duff and Slash all share the rights to the songs. If one says no, its no.

This might have changed, not entirely sure.

[–]Wingchunbum 11 points12 points ago

This is correct. IIRC One of the reasons they all fell out was that Axl also wanted the rest of the band to sign over all the rights to the songs to him. When they refused he thought they were being unreasonable. Basically his ego got too big and the rest of the band walked out.

The news today confirms it is still a huge ego.

[–]moonlapse 35 points36 points ago

Axl is a hermit or some shit - he never emerges with an opinion on anything.

Which is cool with me, honestly. He rocked hard, did a lot of drugs, and has earned rest outside of the public eye.

[–]jesusland111 21 points22 points ago

[–]GeneralWarts 13 points14 points ago

So, I had no idea. Did a quick google search. I'm guessing you are referring to this?

Axl Rose says no to Rock Hall

Calling it a 'personal' decision, the Guns N' Roses co-founder asks not to be inducted to the Hall of Fame.

[–]GeneralWarts 7 points8 points ago

With his inability to let guns n' roses die, the whole chinese democracy thing. I kind of assumed despite his hermit life he would have strong opinions on what to do with their old songs.

[–]simbora 3 points4 points ago

It would most likely of been the same outcome. He just denied the rock and roll hall of fame, I just can't see him saying "Sure thing" to Glee

[–]architect_son 14 points15 points ago

When did Reddit turn into the National Enquirer.

"YOU WON'T BELIEVE WHAT SLASH THINKS OF GLEE! FIND OUT... ON REDDIT!"

[–]leftover_user_name 45 points46 points ago*

Doctors once told Slash he had a month left to live. Slash said "fuck you I won't die!" That was like 10 years ago...

[–]grahamfreeman 86 points87 points ago

Yeah, but I bet he had butterflies in his stomach.

[–]ZarboktheMunificent 36 points37 points ago

That's why they told him he was going to die. They're poisonous butterflies.

[–]Iseeusleep 21 points22 points ago

They were heavy metal butterflies

[–]deadsoon 7 points8 points ago

Iron butterflies?

[–]social_lurker 6 points7 points ago

They weren't butterflies at all. Read the original post. They were moths. He only had one left to live on.

[–]Cygs 5 points6 points ago

I thought I heard somewhere it was water on the knee.

[–]SweetDeez 5 points6 points ago

I realize this post is specifically about GNR and Glee, but I really wish people would appreciate Glee for what it does for today's youth. I'm not saying the show is perfect, or that everything they ever do is beneficial to kids today, but Glee does a great job at tackling important issues. For instance, they have prominent gay characters with realistic plot lines, such as bullying, relationships, losing their virginity, etc. IMO, Glee is funny and poignant, and does connect with a lot of teens/young adults.

[–]AmateurGynecologyst 13 points14 points ago

"I just don't understand the appeal!"

[–]AcesCharles2 3 points4 points ago

Glee literally means glee

[–]duotriophobia23 14 points15 points ago

But he played with the Black Eyed Peas in the superbowl.and let them ruin Sweet Child O' Mine

[–]justgotvacancy 50 points51 points ago

Seeing as how he appeared with the Black Eyed Peas during the Super Bowl, I don't think he's really in a position to judge.

[–]Zeppelanoid 23 points24 points ago

$

[–]alcabazar 11 points12 points ago

He also appeared as a mentor on American Idol once, no idea why he got all high and mighty about music on TV all of the sudden

[–]darkhorseguns 15 points16 points ago

He's appeared with countless people and bands. You don't just turn down the half time at the Super Bowl.

[–]voltron818 89 points90 points ago

GLEE SUCKS.

KARMA POINTS PLEASE.

[–]sslink1 50 points51 points ago

Never in all my days have I seen such bravery.

[–]RageDoll 17 points18 points ago

As did Dave Ghrol, and because of it the producer of Glee went fucking bat shit and started accusing him of being some egotistical twat or something.

The Kings of Leon did the same thing and the producer again went equally bat shit.

The guy who runs the show is an ass, he seems to think if you don't like Glee and won't let Glee use your songs. You're delusional, drunk on fame, have no idea what is popular in the world and deserve nothing more than death.

[–]baduffles 64 points65 points ago

This is another reason to like GNR, they don't take no shit. Glee really does suck, though.

[–]chucky2000 70 points71 points ago

For some reason when I read GNR, my mind automatically when to Galaxy News Radio from Fallout, even though I just read the link...

sigh
